We had a delightful time in Kerala, one of the southern states of India, where we saw breathe-taking sights, ate wonderful food, met very, nice people, and even rode an elephant.

On our first day in Kerala, we flew into Cochin. It was nice to arrive in a warm, quiet town to start the holiday. In Chocin we visited St Francis Church, the oldest Church in India, a 16th century Synagogue in Jew Town and Mattancherry Palace, built by Portuguese, this Palace contains some of India’s most beautiful murals. After the Portuguese, this area was controlled by the Dutch. You can see in the architecture of some of the old houses and churches. We walked around the bay where we watch fishermen bring in the day's catch, cows, water buffalo, and goats wander around the city streets, and men rigging up the old, Chinese fishing nets. We stayed at a lovely hotel called Hotel Fort House which sits right on the water.

From Cochin, we made the long drive to Munnar which is located in the heart of Tea County. The rugged hills of this area are covered with tea plants as well as lush, green vegetation and trees. The views in these carpeted hills are colorful and awesome. Our "hotel" in Munnar was called Camp Noel, and while it got high ratings on Trip Advisor, nobody mentioned its remote location! By the time we got done with our daily sight seeing, the fog was rolling in. Our driver, Joy, dropped us off at the top of a misty mountain because our car couldn't make the rest of the journey. We should have had a clue at this point. We got into a camp jeep and became our 45 minute expedition to the camp, through mud, fog, road wash-out, and potholes big enough to bathe a small water buffalo, and one door that flew open every time we hit a bump (which was often!) The trip was worth it, though, because the camp was wonderful. We had our own, private bungalow with solar-heated water and a fireplace. After a delicious Christmas Even dinner, we decided to turn in, but the staff had other ideas! They hit "repeat" on the stereo and blared the famous, Indian tune, "Happy, Happy, Happy Christmas" as the danced and cheered their way around to each house, leaving a cheery Christmas cake for all their guest. After way too many rounds of the song, the finally turned in to give us all some peace on our Christmas Eve!

We visited an organic spice plantation Thekkady where we got to ride and feed an elephant. It was fun, but a little scary. It's a long fall from the back of an elephant. We saw a tradition India play-I can't remember what it's called-with heavily costumed characters, drummers, and a singer. Although the drums and singer were very loud, we all enjoyed it. I dropped a good share of cash into the economy of Thekkady, buying rugs, throws, pillow cases, and wall hangings.

After Thekkday, we took an overnight houseboat ride down the backwaters of Kerala. I spent the first few hours passed out in bed trying to get over some severe motion sickness (those roads are windy), but still had plenty of time to sit on the deck and watch life on the backwaters pass me by.

Our last few days were spent at a resort in Trivandrum, one of the southern-most cities in Kerala. It was a great way to end the holiday. We did a lot of reading, swimming, sitting on the beach, lathering sunscreen, still getting burned, and eating. We hated to leave this paradise location, but gave in and headed back to Chennai.

I spent my last few days with Megan and her folks in Chennai. We rang in the New Year at Meg's house, sitting on the roof at midnight to watch the fireworks that were being set off around the city. We went to the temple and sights at Mamalapuram on New Year's Day. The ancient carvings were amazing, but we were a little overwhelmed by all the people, motorcycles, and vendors in the city itself. We got back to Chennai and enjoyed a late lunch at a crowded and popular restaurant that served its food on banana leaves. Megan and I ate Indian-style (with our hands) but Kevin and Beth opted for spoons!

It was a delightful holiday filled with funny stories, great photos, and adventurous eating. It was hard to say goodbye to my friend. It's back to my routine, but I am already planning our trip to Jordan in April!!

Walk Like an Egyptian

I spent my Eid/Thanksgiving holiday in Egypt with my good friend, Allison. After arriving in Cairo, we flew out to Aswan early the next morning. We met our group which consisted of a lovely British couple, the Southerns, and a French family-Cedric, Christian, and Claudine with whom we became fast friends, and our Coptic Christian leader, Magdy.

Aswan is in "Upper Egypt" near Lake Nasser, the lake that was formed from damming the Nile River. We spent the evening in Aswan, visiting the granite quarry of the Unfinished Obelisk. Ar 1168 tons this obelisk would have been the biggest and heaviest single stone ever used by the Egyptians, but late in it's process, it developed a crack, so it was abandoned.

The next day took a felucca ride with our group, and some of us got off in the Nubian village to explore. After lunch we took off and had a lovely day cruising the Nile, watching the people who farm and live along the banks. We visited the Temple of Kom Ombo which was dedicated to the crocodile god, Sobek, and the god Horus the Elder in the evening.

The next morning it was off to the Temple of Horus, more cruising and then Luxor. The next morning we were up and heading to the famous Valley of the Kings. We visited the Tombs of Ramses the VII, Ramses the IV and Ramses the IX. Despite the crowds, the tombs were amazing to see with their beautiful paintings and hieroglyphics. The tomb of King Tutankhamen, "King Tut" is also in this area, but we didn't go in it. He is the most famous of the Kings because his was the only tomb found intact. The rest were robbed by workers during the ancient times. We got to see all the treasures from King Tut's tomb in Cairo at the Egyptian Museum. The guy had a lot of loot! Our last stop was the amazing Temple of Karnak with its obelisks, pillars, and rows of lions. While waiting to catch our flight, we joined our French friends for lunch and a felucca ride to Banana Island. We thought this island would be a rare find, but instead we found a line of tourists! They left shortly, so after we returned from our walk around the quaint, agricultural island, we were the only tourist left to enjoy a nice, quiet evening drinking tea and Stela!

Back in Cairo, Allison showed me around all the shopping areas and souks where I proceeded to help the economy of Egypt by spending too much money. Her trusty tour guide, Mohamed, took us to the Egyptian Museum, and to the Pyramids/Sphinx. We had a great meal at a local restaurant with all the traditional Egyptian food-yum, yum. Cairo is a amazing city of mass humanity, piles of rubbish, ancient taxis, blowing sand, fun shops and souks, ancient wonders.

After a mix-up on which day I was supposed to leave, I had to say goodbye. I was sad to leave Allison, but am happy to be back home in Abu Dhabi.

I am just sitting here, having a lazy weekend day, reflecting on my last 80 in my new country of choice. I have survived my first quarter at school, two swim meets and triweekly practices, one burst hot water heater, endless shopping sprees to fill my home, and one trip to Dubai. I think the ground is settling beneath my feet.

I miss my friends and family, and am excited to see my good friend, Allison, in November. We will be taking a Nile Cruise, and doing a quick visit to the sites in Cairo. In December I will be celebrating another Christmas with the McCrindle family. Same great family, different great location. Megan has made grand plans for us to tour the area of Kerala, India. Both trips should give me renewed energy to work through the haul to spring break!

It's Halloween week, so I must get cracking on my costume! We have a festival filled with kids, games, and too much candy. Some of the staff are throwing an adult party too, so I have to make a costume suitable for both! Will post photos! The Abu Dhabi International Film festival is going on for the next few weeks, and George is starring in one of the films (Men Who Stare at Sheep). We weren't able to get tickets to that movie because it's by special invitation only (guess I'm not special enough), but we got tickets for 12 other movies. Guess what I'll be doing in October?

I went to with a friend from work to get the tickets at the Emirates Palace-a seven star hotel! It was very nice. We sat down and enjoyed a cup of coffee and pretended like we could afford to stay there. The waiter asked us if we wanted regular or the Emirates lattes, and when we inquired about the difference, he told us the Emirates version is sprinkled with gold!! We opted for the regular. I'd rather wear gold than drink it.

This morning I went kayaking with Kelly and Bonnie, the two ladies in my classroom, Kelly's daughter, Nicole, Heidi (a nurse) and her Eram. We paddled out to an area with flamingos, so you know that made me happy! We docked on a little island, went for a swim, at some snacks, then headed back before it got to hot. It was very nice.

So now it's Saturday night, and it's time to get ready to back to work tomorrow. Next Thursday is our first swim meet! The kids are excited to be getting out of school early and going to Dubai. A new friend, Stephanie, and I rented a car, and headed to Dubai. I was a little worried about driving on the highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai because I have heard so many horror stories about the accident rate, but it was much easier than driving in Syria or Jordan.

In Dubai, we stayed with our friend, Joni. The apartment, which actually belongs to Joni's boyfriend, Peter (who wasn't there), is located on the 26th floor with a spectacular view the marina. We packed a lot into our short trip, including a trip to the Dubai museum, a visit to the Palm (the manmade island that looks like a palm tree from the air), a souke visit, and many excursions to the malls. Dubai malls are a cultural experience unto themselves.

At the gentle urging of Moe, we sought out the Al-Jazari elephant clock. Al-Jazari was a Muslim inventor, engineer, and astronomer in the 13th century. The clock replica is located at the Ibn Battuta mall which has an amazing theme focused on the travels of Ibn Battuta (an Moroccan scholar who travelled for thirty years, covering most of the Islamic world). Each section reflects the different countries to which he travelled. The elephant clock is located in "India", and is, apparently unknown to anyone outside of that country (except some old, wise man in Oregon). There were tons of India's taking pictures, and just us three American girls! The clock never did it's thing, but they had the animated screens to show us what it does. You can see it on youtube.

Once back in Abu Dhabi, I took advantage of the rental car and did some major shopping for my house. It is looking and feeling so homey. I got my cable hooked up, my spare bedroom furniture delivered, bought plants at the plant souke, and am now busy swearing as I assemble my IKEA wardrobe. The house is ready for visitors, who's first?!

Home Sweet Home

I have been in Abu Dhabi almost a month. I am getting my apartment put together slowly but surely. The curtain guys and internet man came yesterday, so I am very happy. I feel connected to the world again. I can't wait for my shipment. Who knows when that will get here. Now it is Ramadan, so I don't expect it to come until after Ramadan is over.

I am loving my new job and my students. I visit a lot of classrooms throughout the day, so I am still putting names with faces, but that will come. We started swim team practice today. It is torture to stand on the side of the pool, drenched in sweat. One day I might "accidently" fall in.

It is an understatement to say it's hot here. The heat and humidity are a physical presence. I think it's supposed to be 111 F tomorrow. You know it's hot when people don't even go to the beach. The mall is definitely the place to be in this weather.

Yesterday we took a tour around Abu Dhabi. It was fun to see where all the Sheiks live although it is hard to see their palaces because they are behind high walls. We stopped by the Grand Mosque, but didn't go on a tour. It's quite impressive.

Red Couch, Orange Egg, and Green Bus

I finally made a decision and bought some furniture. My sofa and two chairs are almost identical to the ones I had in Beaverton except they are all three red, and slightly larger. I also bought a dining set that is rectangular and seats six. It all looks nice, but reminds me of how much I still need. When my shipment comes, I will have my paintings and carpets to add warmth too. The echo in my living room has been drastically reduced!

Shopping is a breeze here with lots of super markets and shops. I love having a smaller market just a block from my house. I am so impressed by all the products I can get. Sara Lee is a well traveled lady! The other morning I made myself an egg, and discovered that the yolks are orange. Not a little orangish, but Crayola marker orange. I am sure they are just as delicious as yellow-yolked eggs, but I just couldn't eat them!

I have decided, at least for now, to not buy a car. I am on a convenient bus route, so I am going to go hop on the green bus and head home for the weekend! It's my first run, so I hope it goes well! Wish me luck!

Abu Dhabi

My first days in the United Arab Emirates are a bit blurry, but otherwise fine. I have managed to fall asleep, and stay asleep, at reasonable times. I have yet to locate the mosque that has a lovely 4:30 call to prayer, but it must be close because it's my early morning alarm. I am having a harder time with my eating schedule more than sleep. I am starving at 9:00 p.m., midnight, and 5:00 a.m-breakfast, lunch, and dinner time in Oregon!

My apartment is massive, pretty, and very empty! I am not in the apartment I thought I'd be in, but this one is much closer to school, and one block from a super market and bus route. I am excited about all three of those aspect because it means I don't have to have a car! I guess parking in my neighborhood is a nightmare, so I am willing to brave the heat for the next month or so.

We did a lot of shopping yesterday and this morning. Yesterday I couldn't make any decisions, so I left the mall with mostly cleaning supplies, bathroom accessories, and bedding. Today I jumped right in an bought a beautiful, painted, India cabinet, a flat screen TV (my first REAL TV), DVD, and a microwave. I still don't have any furniture to sit on, and my living room is the size of a small gym, but I'm sure I won't be sitting on the floor forever. IKEA calls me back. Hopefully the echoing with subside with some curtains and sofas! For now though, we're off to do official stuff, so it's goodbye, goodbye, goodbye...

Dear Syria,

I am sorry I left without saying goodbye. I was in such a hurry packing my belongings I'm afraid we didn't have the chance to properly say goodbye to each other.

When I first arrive on that hot, August morning, I never thought Syria would be someplace I'd consider home. Of course, there were times when you drove me majnoona with your crazy drivers, littered streets, and smokers everywhere, but there was always more of you to love than not.

I loved peaceful Friday mornings with only the street cleaners and cats to keep me company of my way to church. I loved your late-night restaurants with hommus and shishas. I loved your lemon and mint, that just can't be duplilcated in America no matter how many times I try. I loved your ancient sights and soukes. I loved your Old City with its confusing, maze of alleys and streets that felt as comfortable as our own hometowns. I loved your shop keepers who would simply say, "Bookra" if they didn't have proper change for your 1000 note. I loved your beautiful homes with marble floors, hidden behind ugly facades of dirty stucco and wires. But most of all, I loved your people. People who greeted me each morning with a "Saba el khair" never once showing any disdain about my Americanese. People who would always help a car full of crazy foreigners find their way around, even getting on a motorcycle and leading the way. People who always offered what they had to eat, even though you made much more than them. Friends who were always willing to help us talk to someone on the phone when our limited Arabic just wasn't enough. People who became seems less like friends and more like family.

So Syria, consider this my proper farewell. I would like to say, "See you again soon", but I don't think that will happen. Take care of your people, they are your greatest natural resource. I miss the life I left behind there, and I miss my friends.

Love,
Channin

Run, Forest, Run

This weekend Megan and I ran in the Terry Fox Run. It has been a wild and crazy year, and I just forget to do it.

Last night some of my fellow teachers, students, and parents were in a fashion show for a local store. We signed up thinking it would be a small, easy thing, but it turned out to be a much bigger ordeal than we expected! We found out that the president's wife attended last year! It turned out to be quite fun, and it was held at the Danish Institute which is housed in a beautiful, old Arabic home in the Old City. Afterwards we walked to one of our favorite restaurants and enjoyed delicious food and a bottle of wine. It's what supermodels do, you know!

The two months are filled with activities, like St. Andrew's Ball, the Marine Ball, Irish Night, Skool/Disco Night, Halloween, and birthday parties, so I should have plenty to report back about. My (brilliant) neighbors above me are completely refurbishing their apartment. What the construction workers have not discovered are a few little phenomena called gravity and water damage. I came home on Friday to discover the 6th flood of the year in my spare room, dining room, hallway, and utility room. By this point I'd had enough and called in the troops-aka Mr. and Mrs. Gates. They were kind enough to come over and survey the damage, get someone in to clean it up, and order someone to come the next day to start cleaning up my garden. My garden is filled with fallen debris (this would be gravity at work) from the construction. Not only does it makes a huge mess, but it clogs the drains as well. So when the city shuts the water off for the day, and the workers forget to turn the taps off, and all the water gushes into my house and garden, it all sits there, ready for my to find some hickory barky-barky.

Speaking of barky-barky...you should have heard my new, Bulgarian neighbor yell at the building Super! She had tried to call him hours before when the leaking first started, but he wouldn't answer his phone (because it was Friday). Her Arabic is really good, but let's just say, you didn't really need to know Arabic to understand her. Let's hope I never get on her bad side!!

Is There a Doctor (Kevorkian) in the House

I haven't written much lately, but I have been keeping myself pretty well entertained. This past weekend we got invited to a dinner at the Armenian club. My friend, Sylvia, and her husband are very active in the Armenian community here, so it was fun to see a little splice of her life outside DCS. They had great food and music, and we were greeted at the door by shots of whiskey. The downside was all the smoke.

So you might ask...why did I mention Dr. Kevorkian? Well, he is one of the best known Armenian doctors in the world! We just don't recommend you take your children to him.

I'm Still Here

I haven't had much time to post lately, but I'm doing fine. I had a BBQ at my house last night. I pulled out all the flamigo themed items. The new BBQ works wonders-at least that's what my friend, John (the grill master) told me!! It was hot as blazes, even at 10:00 at night, so when the number dwindled, we moved inside for AC and Trivial Pursuit. Let's just say, I hope that we aren't the only hope for the future of the world! We started rooting for other teams just so we could finally end the game. At 1:00 am we all just gave up!

It is Ramadan now, so lot of people are fasting here. It doesn't effect me too much except the shoot a cannon off about 4:00 to wake people up to eat and prayer before the fast begins. Since we don't fast, Olga has interpreted this cannon to be her wake up call to get up and find live cockroaches to bring to Channin in bed. Three times now I've had to strip my bed at 4 ish in search of the beast. These puppies are huge!

After Ramadan is finished, we have a 4-5 day break. I think I will stay in Syria and visit some of the sights. A woman I met last summer at a Special Ed convention might come and visit. She lives in Doha, Qatar. It'd be fun to show someone around and maybe see some new sights.

Hope all is well in the US of A. Miss all of you!

Scarey Lives!

As some of you remember, I was kind enough to offer a REALLY sweet cat to any takers. "Scarey Cat" might have a few issues, but she must also have about 90 lives! Megan called me last night to report that Scarey was outside her door eating a can of Friskies. We really can't believe she lived through the summer without Megan feeding her, with the city culling the cats, and with all the summer heat. She's amazing. And....still up for adoption! We figure if she is tough enough to survive this long, we are going to have the vet take her and heal whatever she has, give her a bath, and let her live in Megan's garden. Long live Scarey Cat!!!!!

Feels Like Home

It's hard to believe that one year ago I set down in this strange, foreign land called Syria full of nerves, great expectations, and lot of excitement. It was so different coming in this time. While still suffering from jet-lag, Tylenol PM withdrawal and severe ear ache, it felt more comfortable and familiar. Someone from the US embassy met me at the plane, so I had not problems getting through customs. What a blessing!

It was so nice to get back to my own house and cats. Olga was so happy to see me. She stalked me for a few days, but now we have found a nice, happy balance in our relationship. Thankfully cats don't hold grudges because I'm sure she could make my life hell!

I was a little upset that I was leaving the day the Olympics started, but I found four channels that were showing them. Did you know that table tennis is the most popular Olympic sport in China!? Forest would like like (that's Forest, Forest Gump). I personally don't think air rifle is a sport unless you're a redneck, but that's just personal opinion, feel free to argue!

Our elementary school is opening a week late because our new school is not finished yet. As my good friend Gomer Pyle always said, "Surprise, surprise, surprise". The men have been working around the clock to get it done, but it's just too big of a project to finish in the time they had. It is so much bigger than I expected, and will be very nice for elementary.

I will try to figure out why people can't comment, so hang tight for you commenting-type people!!

Cool Cousins

We put the fun in dysFUNctual!

Well, after a year of talking about it, Moe and I finally made it to the top of Gunsight-along with Sara, Mitch, Pat, Kimberly, Taylor, and Christopher. Sammye and Pat claimed the top honors at bowling, but we're not sure who won kickball (we were equally bad).

Baker seems dull without the crowd, but we can do it all again next year...in Greece (the country)!

High on a Hill

That would be a location, not state of being! Challey, Laura and I had a wonderful time in Europe. We did a whirlwind tour of Germany and Austria. Laura and I fell in love with beautiful Hallstatt, Austria, Challey and I drank a liter of beer each at the Haufbrauhause in Munich-they were bigger than our heads, and even managed to walk back to hotel on our own accord. Anyone want to come to Damascus and adopt her?!

International Gala

This weekend we attended the International Gala at the Four Seasons Hotel here in Damascus. Megan and I booked ourselves into a resort in Byblos, which is 37 km outside Beirut, and spent four days relaxing. Our biggest stressors were where to eat and if we wanted to sunbathe on the beach or poolside. We did some quick shopping on our way through Beirut, got Spunky from the cute vet and groomer, then headed home in our 1985 Chevrolet Caprice.

Today was a half day, and the PTA had a teacher appreciation luncheon. We had food from all over the world, so it was the most amazing potluck I've ever been to. I ate so much; I couldn't even try the desserts. Being from Iowa, Megan and I thought it'd be a good idea to dress up as farmers. Since Syria is lacking in Goodwills, we couldn't find overalls. We would have represented Iowa better, but didn't think it would be appropriate to dress up as unwed, high school dropout mothers. I did Eastern Oregon proud, though, and we went with the cowboy theme. It was a great celebration with booths from all over the world giving out traditional foods, showing off crafts, clothing, goods. I tried to convince the Italians that they should give away their leather purses, but they just laughed!

Free to a Good Home

Meet Scary Cat...Poster kitty for why you should follow Bob Barkers orders and spay and neuter your pets! Luckily, Thursday is Syria's National Day, so we only have a four-day week!

I went to Jordan and Megan, and her friend Scott. We hit the Dead Sea (still haven't swum in it), then headed down to Aqaba. After a very dramatic evening of trying to find a hotel after the place we stayed failed to book our reservation, we enjoyed lounging on the beach of the Red Sea. Megan and I took a glass-bottom boat to see the coral reefs. We decided we are definitely snorkeling next time, but it was a little too chilly when we went out.

We headed to Wadi Rum (and Coke) and stayed at the camp there. We took a nice, three-hour jeep tour of the area, and Megan and I climbed on one of the rock arches.

We headed to Petra where we visited friends, visited the sites, ate dinner and camped out in an old Nabaetean tomb, hiked a lot, and enjoyed the wonderful weather. I stayed a few days more than Megan to visit Ghassab.

Spring Break!!

I am leaving for my (blessed) spring break early Friday morning. We had our Good Friday church service where we did a play. It wasn't intended to be funny, but with Megan and I as Judas and Peter and our friend, Sri, as our Indian Jesus, it amused the congregation. As soon as church was over, we headed out to Lebanon. We had a great time, mostly shopping and eating, and can't wait to go back.

Yesterday we had an Easter service, then went out to eat. The weather is nice and warm now, so we sat on the patio and enjoyed our lunch (almost smoke free). The waiter told us that he missed us, so either we don't go there enough now or we used to go there way too much!!

Only two weeks, and it's SPRING BREAK. I woke up about 11:30 to find my entire house filled with smoke. It was so bad in the kitchen that I had to soak a towel with water and crawl in on my hands and knees. I blasted the exhaust fan and my ceiling fans, opened every door and window, and started waving the towel around like a crazy woman. Finally at 12:30 I figured I'd just let it air out naturally. I had to sleep on the floor of my bedroom next to the sliding glass door in order to avoid the terrible stench and to get fresh air. Luckily, my cats (who were locked in the kitchen) escaped to the garden, and seem to be doing OK. At first I couldn't find them, and I was pretty sure they'd died from the smoke.

This morning all the smoke had cleared, but my house smells like a tire factory. My clothes are tinged with that smell and I can't get the smell or taste to go away. I am lucky, however, that I did wake up. I could have easily died of smoke inhalation. Today I am asking the school to buy a smoke alarm (not a common thing in Syrian households), and I have a new appreciation for firefighters!!

High Tea

Megan, Lynn, Channin, Chereylene, Evelyn, and Sylvia enjoying high tea at the Four Seasons.

A Night With Mr. M

Last night, Nora, one of our parents here at DCS, invited a group of teachers to her friend's place for dinner and music. Her friend, "Mr. M" was being visited by his Italian, profession friend. As you can see by the picture, he has a beautiful house with his original artwork and floor to ceiling bookshelves. The food was fantastic (they served mashed potatoes!!) and Albert (the guy in the blue shirt) got out the guitar and played for us. We sang and drank wine until the wee hours, and are now all exhausted, hungover and trying to be nice to small children. It was a wonderful night, definitely worth the rough morning.

Say yes to Krak

I went on another embassy-sponsored trip this weekend. It would have been great except the bus was very bouncy and smelled of benzine and the road was very curvy. Add those all together, and you get a great case of motion sickness! I sat in the front seat with the garbage bin between my feet.

When I wasn't trying on the verge of vomiting, the trip was fun. The Krak de Chevalier is one of the world's best preserved Crusader castle. It was the headquarters of the Hopitallers.

Among it's many great structural features, it host one of the oldest indoor plumbing systems! I didn't try it out, but I have a good picture of Megan demonstrating how to use a squat toilet!! To save her a little dignity, I won't post that picture!Publish Post

We also made a quick trip to Ma'loula, a Christian village near Damascus. It is one of the few places where Aramaic is still spoken. That's the language Jesus spoke, if you didn't already know! A woman at the church said the Lord's Prayer to us in Aramaic, which was really cool. St. Sergus is one of the oldest churches in the world, and has been carbon-dated about to 295-325. Our stop there was very quick, so I plan on going back and spending more time.

Strange Comments

If you see strange comments on here, please don't click on them. Thursday night I hosted a Bunko Night for our church. There were 16 people there which is a perfect, four-table Bunko group. Everyone had fun, prizes were handed out, we ate, laughed, and everyone went home. Well, almost everyone. As the evening waned on, we started to realized that Grace (an older, slightly special Iraqi woman) seemed to be making herself at home. Grace lives in Bludon which is a good 45 minutes from Damascus, and she really had no plans to go home. Finally, Chris (one of the elders) asked if she could spend the night, and I couldn't say no. All went well except Grace decided to take a "bano", but she couldn't really get into my tub, so when I went to go to the bathroom at 11:00, my bathroom had about 2 inches of water on it!! Luckily I have drains, so I opened those up, got the squeagy out, and drained my bathroom. My friends at church decided that keeping Grace cancelled any sins that might send me to hell. I am now carte blanche!!

On Friday night we went to Megan's to watch Sweeney Todd. It was her birthday, so we brought gifts of scanky underwear (musical hearts) and a rababa. Now we can play a duet at church (sans undies).

Yesterday, Chris (same Chris as mentioned above) invited Megan and I to go visit some castles with him and Sri-another guy from church. We had quite the adventure. Chris likes to take the road less travelled, so we were winding through small, rural villages asking for directions in our limited Arabic. We'd ask the way to Tartouse, they'd point the way, and we'd head off in the opposite direction. In one tiny village we passed the same group of guys 3 times. Two times we went down a "road" that ended at some houses with a bunch of chickens. The locals were so nice and came out to direct Chris as he reversed out. Then they wished us good luck as we (again) headed down the wrong road. We decided that we were the most excited thing to happen to that village in quite a while!!

Today, back to the grind. I caught the cold all my kids had last week, so I'm going to try not to be Miss Viola Swamp!

I Owe My Soul to the Extra Market Store

It's difficult to determine if Syria has good customer service or not because it's avery bi polar industry. One on hand, a clerk might follow you around, pulling out items of various colors and sizes at your slightest interest, but then leave you waiting for ten minutes at the counter while he talks to his friend on his mobile phone. Here is my latest store experience...

Yesterday morning I went to the Extra Mart on my way to school. I got three cans of club soda and a diet Pepsi totaling 100 SP. I only had a 1,000 SP bill, and the clerk didn't have change (they NEVER have change in Syria), so he told me to come back after school when they had money in the till. I went in after aerobics class and bought a few more things equaling 225 SP. I told the clerk to add 100 SP more on because I owed 100 from the morning. He was all confused, called his friend from across the street (who doesn't work at the store) and I explained to his friend. He doesn't understand, so he calls his friend. Soon I'm arguing with three men that I really do owe them money! It wasn't a language issue, they just wouldn't figure out why I wanted to pay the money in the evening when I "borrowed" it in the morning! And to add to the whole sitation, the two friends who were called in were both standing in the store smoking!

The joys of living overseas. As some of you may have heard on the news, there was a bombing two nights ago here in Damascus. It was in an area about 5 miles from me, called Kafer Soseh. It was targeted at a senior Hezbollah operative. He was killed, and one bystander was injured. The US Embassay announced that it is unaware of any threats to American in Syria.

Today marks the third anniversary of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri. Several Lebanese leaders are holding a large rally in Martyr's Square Beirut (just in case any of you martyrs are looking for a place to hang out on this Valentine's Day ), so large crowds are expected there. And we all know where large crowds of pissed off people go, usually violence follows. A group of people from DCS planned a ski trip to Lebanon this weekend, but strong encouragement from the Embassy, they are staying home.

So this weekend, I'm staying close to home, opening up the 20 left over mini boxes of Nerds, and watching Dr. Phil. If I get real crazy, I might dump the Nerds in water and pretend it's Kool-Aide.

A Day in the Life of an International Teacher

Today is one of the days my maid comes, so I try to stay at school until she leaves. I know, boo-hoo. I do hate being at home, eating BonBons and watching Oprah while a woman the size of Jeanette irons my clothes!

Sunday-Back to School after a fun weekend. Habibi is back from the vet. She's a new woman!!

Monday-We only have 12 play practices left before our elementary play AristoCats. Pretty scarey. We have about, well, one really talented student and maybe 4 more who aren't bad. That leaves us with 20 would can't tell left from right or step on a beat. I hope we have really cute costumes!!

Tuesday-Megan and I skip out 7th period prep to hit the commisary at the American Embassy. They have the nerve to run out of Fresh Step kitty litter. Don't they have a book about how to potty train cats?!

Wednesday- I came up with a grand idea (if I don't say so myself) to have a bake sale at the play. The procedes are going towards getting our school cats fixed! The students have named them Spot, Honey, and Larry, but if we don't intervene quickly will be adding a few more Curly and Moes than we will know what to do with. Of course, the world WOULD be a better place with at least a few more Moes!

Thursday-TGIT! They have a live band at The Bunker, so we'll probably go out. I'm not a big fan of group activities, but it was a lot of fun.

Shehba is the birthplace of the Emperor Philip the Arabian who reigned in Rome from 244 to 149 BC-the only Arab to rule Rome. It has a some ruins and a little museum with amazing mosiacs. It also has the biggest Druze population in Syria. Druze began as a sect of Shi'a Islam. Some Druze consider themselves Muslim, but others don't. They are a very secretive group-they don't intermarry and you can't convert. The women wear white, crocheted shalls and the men have long beards and turbins. They seem to be the Islamic version of the Amish! There are Druze communities all over the world, and my tour book said you can check them out at www.druze.com!

Bosra is an ancient city dating back to 1334 BC. Bosra (referred to in the Bible) became one of the leading Nabatean cities before being made the capital of the Province of Arabia by its Roman conquerors (106 AD). It was a major commerce for caravans, with several market places and fine buildings, until the fall of the Roman Empire. Early Bosra was Christian, but it has it's link to Islam r According to tradition, thMuhammad's had a conversation here with a Nestorian monk named Bahira, who is said to have prophecized of his nephew.
Bosra was the first city in Syria to become Muslim. The minarets on the mosque are the oldest, still standing, in whole of Islam. Bosra was on the way to Mecca, so many people stopped their on their pilgramage. Prosperity lasted until the 17th century when the region was became unsafe and the pilgrims began to take a less dangerous route further west.

Eat a Good Breakfast!

It's that time of year-when parents around the world leave the Choco Sugar Puffios in the cupboard and make their children wholesome breakfasts with at least 2 of the major food groups. Yes my friends, it's time for the Iowa Test of Basic Skills!!

I cannot believe we are still torturing small, innocent (wink-wink) students with this test. I mean, WE took the ITBS when we were in school. Of course, it didn't seem so strange since we really were from Iowa, but you have to do some explaining to a bunch of kids from Syria and beyond who don't even know Iowa is a state. Well, you may have to explain that to some of the kids in Iowa too!

So now I have been handed the torch of wisdom from my great foreteachers, and I have bubbled in my pledge (with a sharp number 2 pencil) to monitor, encourage, but never help my students in this rite of passge. Our first incling that it was going to be a joyous trip for us is when we say Seattle's Best in the airport. Let me tell you, it's a far cry from the Damascus airport where men sit and smoke under the no smoking signs, where everything is post-communist gray, and people have no idea that lining up does not involve shoving yourself infront of the person in front of you! One of my greatest moments was when we arrived in Bahrain, I went to get some money exchanged. One of the Syrian men who'd shoved in front of us at the ticket counter in Syria walked right past me in line and up to the counter. The man at the counter told him to go to the back of the line. He had to repeat himself several time because the man had no idea what he was talking about!! Victory.

The other highlights of Bahrian...Pizza Hut, Chili's, Toys R Us, shopping malls, and English. When we weren't in the conference, we definitely went overboard. We just don't have those things here in Syria, so it was like a day at Disneyland for us. Besides those attractions, I am not sure what Bahrain has to offer (unless you're looking for a second or third wife).

Our first hotel turned out to be a bit dodgey. The first night we had rock-hard beds, so we asked to be moved. They put us in a nice, big room with OK beds, so we thought we could overlook the somewhat suspisios Filiino women hanging out with the Arab men in the lobby. Well, about midnight I woke up to Ricky Martin turned techno blaring from below me. Turns out our nice room was directly above the night club. About that time we hear "Giggle, giggle, giggle, ah, Muhammed where you going?" in the hallway. I just about lost it. We packed our stuff and moved to another room where we got a few hours of sleep without Ricky or the hookers. The next day we decided to suck it up and pay more money for the Crown Plaza. For what we paid there, you know I took every shampoo and shower cap I could get my hands on!!

With our shopping bags full of Splenda and butter spray, we headed home. I wouldn't say we were exactally thrilled to see the Damascusian airport, but it was good to be hback where we know people will smoke in all undesignated areas, where lines consist of pushing a prodding, and where Chili's is just a way to describe the weather. Home.

I did, however, learn to say, "I was here first" in Arabic!!

A Snowy Day in Damascus

We had the rare experience of snow here in Syria! Some of our students had never seen it snow, and they all went crazy. It's a wet, heavy snow that packs into really nice, hard ice balls. They were just flabbergasted when we told them they couldn't throw snowballs. I made up a great story about a kid I knew growing up who lost an eye because someone hit him with a snowball. I heard my students telling all their friends! If you tell them it happened in America, they take it as the gospel truth! Other kids decided to make snow angels first thing in the morning, and are now sitting, cold and wet, in their classes.

Photos

Just wanted to let you know that I've finally put some photos on my Shutterfly. My friends, Megan, Allison, Chereylene, and I went to Aleppo to celebrate this milestone. Aleppo is Syria's second major city, located in the Northern part of Syria.

On our way we stopped off at one of the best preserved dead cities- Serjilla. It was settled in 473 BC and was quite wealthy, with bath houses, mosaics, churches, etc. It was abandoned in the 7th century when Arabs conquered the area and changed the trading routes. Why anyone would build in this area, I have no idea. I have never seen such rocky terrain in my life. We felt like we were driving on the moon. Although we loved the dead city, our favorite part of Serjilla was driving back to the road, some kids were out in the street playing. One sweet little girl, about 8 years old, was yielding a nice, big rusty axe that she was swinging around! Syria's Lizzy Bordon?! I tried to snap a photo, but I motorcycle drove by just as the camera clicked. Her parents might consider letting her play with Barbies.

The trip to Aleppo is actually quite pretty with "a lot" of trees, fields, and a nice view of the Anti-Lebanon Mountain range. It was nice to see green field and mountains, especially after spending Christmas in arid Jordan.

We loved Aleppo. It was much cleaner and calmer than Damascus. We stayed at a hotel that was converted from two, old, Arabic houses. We stayed in the basement (cellar) rooms because they were much warmer than the other, more drafty rooms. My friends took me out and bought me WAY too many drinks, then we went to a nice (I'm told) Italian restaurant. That part of the night, a little blurry for this girl. I recovered enough the next day to make a trip to the Citadel and Souke. Both were amazing. I could have passed on "Carnage Alley" with the meat (goats, chickens, camel) carcasses and innards hanging about though. I will get pictures on Shutterfly soon. Keep looking.

We rented a car for our trip, and we learned a very valuable lesson about driving after dark in Syria. DON'T DO IT!! I guess it's not against the law to not have tail lights, to drive going the opposite direction, or pass on the shoulder, but don't even try to pass on the left lane when Mr. MachoArabMan want to speed down the road because he'll tailgate you, flash his lights, and kindly blare his horn at you until you move over. It was the most nerve-racking experience of my life.

Next week it's off to Bahrain....

Happy New Year

I had a wonderful time in Jordan. My friend, Megan's, parents came from Iowa, and they had a blast. Her mom is already planning for her next visit. We visited the Dead Sea, Mt. Nebo, Petra, and Wadi Musa. After they returned to Syria, I stayed on in Jordan with Ghassab. We did a lot of hiking, visited the Red Sea in Aqaba, and camped in Wadi Rum for a night. The only bad thing about the trip was that the village where he lives has a lot of dogs and donkeys, and they make A LOT of noise at night. Braying donkeys, not cute at 3:00 a.m. Not to mention, he lives directly across from the mosque, so they blare the call to prayer (the first one starts at 4:30 a.m.)

Last night they blocked off the huge traffic circle by my house, and held a concert. We didn't go to the concert since it was an Arabic singer we weren't much interested in, but we made it for the other activities. There were Cirque Du Sole type performers, hot air balloons, and the most amazing fireworks I have ever seen. They must have gone on for half an hour, and the grand finale was non-stop fireworks for 5 minutes. They shot half of them off right there in the circle and the other half up on the mountain. Megan lived in China for 4 years and said she'd never seen anything that amazing, even there.

Tomorrow we go back to school, so I'm up here trying to do lesson plans. Good times.

Wishing you all a happy 2008!!

Merry Christmas

I am getting ready to head to Jordan, so I wanted to wish everyone a very happy Christmas.

Megan's parents finally arrived after a nightmare trip of canceled flights, (almost) rioting people at the Jordan airport, a failed bribe attempt by their taxi driver when they got pulled over, and a lie that their daughter works at the embassy. I won't say it looks like Christmas since we were all running around in light jackets, soaking up the sun yesterday, but I'm definitely getting in the spirit of the season.

Today we had our Christmas service at church, before everyone heads out to far corners of the world. They had people from each area of the world read, so I was the North American. I though they should have picked Megan because she is a better (and louder) public speaker, but I held my own. I also sang a solo which should tell how desperate we are for talent here. I practiced so much, but was very nervous. I didn't do as well as I'd done in practice, but it was OK. I think it's the first solo I've ever sung, not including our karaoke adventures at Stockmans!! I think the congregation was just happy that one of our sweet, but totally tone deaf Filipino girls didn't sing again!

After church I had an open house which turned out well. I even have a Christmas "tree" with lights and ornaments and icicle lights. They really make the gold on the pillars shine!! I even got some of the kids playing Scrabble, so it was truly a joyful event for me!!

I have 2 1/2 days left of school, then it's break, glorious break. I still have one school bazaar (where I have to sing Christmas carols), one community time with the students, and one staff breakfast to survive, then I'm sleeping for 2 days!!

I will be in Damascus until Christmas day, so I will try to write before I leave...If not, a very Happy Christmas to all!

Ode to Chagness

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139185278772784066" style="FLOAT: right; Us Puritan woman wear the white bonnet as a sign of our virtue and Godliness. I know the ship says Nina, but Mayflower was much too long to put on such a small, humble ship. I didn't think the Mahoney brothers would even notice the ship. They do have a history of not seeing vehicles on the side of the road, especially in foreign countries.

About the only wildlife I have seen in Syria involves stray cats, but this week alone, I've encountered two rare, virtually unseen animals. I think they both say a lot about the effects of growth hormones on animals.

Hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving. Christmas is right around the corner! I'd love to get a few Christmas cards (big hint). Remember my address here is Damascus Community School, Channin Becker 428 Thunderbird Rd Box 149, Phoenix, AZ 85022. A couple of veteran teachers, Evelyn and Lynn, and Lynn's daughter, Chaeli, Megan and I hired a car to drive us. It was a nice, new 4 wheel drive, the only problem was, it only held 4 passengers. One of us, usually Megan and Spunky, ended up riding in the back with all the luggage. The Syrian man who owned the car kept telling us, "it's new, very nice" and we kept telling him, "yes, it's very nice. For 4 people!". It wasn't a bad ride despite that little issue. They let me play singing games in the car.

We stayed in a nice, little hotel right on the Palmyra's ruins. Palmyra is an ancient dessert oasis that was located on the Silk Road. In it's heyday, it much have been one spectacular place. There were hardly any tourist there, and the ruins just lie out in the the open, no fences, no parking lots. The town is quite small and tourism is about the only thing the town has, so we got haggled a lot. The people are really quite nice despite the desperation. The oasis is something. All you see is desert forever then there's this big, green area with water just springing up from the sand. Damascus look green and lush after two days in Palmyra.

We took a camel ride. I know I swore I would not ride a camel, but it was actually pretty fun. It was a little hairy when the camel got up and down, but once we were riding, it was actually more comfy than riding a horse. I could probably be talked in to during a caravan into the desert for a few days.

We visited the castle and a tomb. We walked on top of the tomb which made me very nervous, but the pictures turned out great. They aren't too blurry from my shaking.

Just Another Weekend

I was supposed to go to Palmyra this weekend, but the trip got cancelled, so I am staying home and doing mundane weekend-type things.

The commissary at the American Embassy got a new shipment in, so a group of us walked up there and invaded the place. A lot of the stuff you can get in Syria, but other things you can't or they are very expensive. The commissary can be spendy too since they have to ship all the stuff over to Lebanon and then truck it from there. It's a good place to pick up pork product when you so need a slab of bacon. I also get cat litter and food there. I saw this sign on the way there. It's my favorite sign here yet because Syrian's love to drive with one hand on the horn, one on their mobile. It drives me crazy! We decided that the Syrian pastime was seeing how close you can come to a pedestrian without actually hitting him. I seriously think they speed up when they seem people crossing!

I went out last night to the Marine Bar. It's not quite as exciting as Stockman's on a Thursday night, but what we lack in entertainment, we made up for in teeth and a high school education.

This next week is our BIG Harry Potter Halloween. This school goes all out. Since they don't have Halloween in Syria, it is the kids' only chance to have this experience. We are turning the school into Hogwarts, complete with Diagon Alley were the kids decorate their own brooms, wands, "Boo" bags, eat snacks in the Great Hall, play Muggle Quidich, and trick-or-treat (of course). I am going to be Tonks, so I'm tie-dying a Weird Sister t-shirt and tights, wearing my robe, and painting my hair pink. We'll work on the spikes, but I think my hair might be too long. Look for the pictures at the end of the week! Our director is going to be Dumbledore, and he wasn't' too happy to hear that he might be gay!

Wishing you all a happy weekend!! If you haven't registered with Google so you can make comments, please do. We took a taxi from Damascus to Amman, Jordan (which cost about $20 each) directly after school on Thursday, and spent the night in Mad'aba. We picked Allison's sister, Jody up at the airport. She lives in Egypt, and flew over for the weekend.

Our first day we visited Mt. Nebo, the sight where Moses saw the promise land. It is near the "Moses Spring" where he hit the rock with a stick and water poured out. We then drove down the rode a bit to the site where Jesus was baptized. The actual spot is now dry because of dams, but we did go to the river where they baptize people today. In the picture, I am getting water at this site. Right across the river is Israel. If you check out my Shutterfly, I took several pictures of this. It's the closest I'll come to the Holy land for quite awhile. Both sites were amazing. To think that I was standing where Jesus, John, Moses stood is beyond words.

Next we departed from our spiritual journey to hit the Meridian Hotel on the Dead Sea. We were all jonesing for a burger, so we went to "Champions" at the hotel. It was a spot-on replica of an American restaurant. I could have been at Chili's in Portland. We had the best nachos and burgers, then walked down to the sea. We didn't swim because we were so hot and tired from all the holy sites, and we didn't want all that salty residue on our skin. We headed south to Petra and checked into our lovely, Amra Palace Hotel.

I LOVED Petra. I actually didn't know what it was before, but if you've seen Indiana Jones, this is the place! It's a Nabetaen city that was carved out of the rocks in the canyons and hills of that area. The Nabetaen's were very ingenious and created aqueducts, underwater reservoirs, and beautiful carvings. The pictures don't do it justice. We actually stayed there one day longer than we'd planned. The last night, we slept in the desert in a Bedouin camp. It was the best night's sleep I've had in a long time.

It was a long trek home, but definitely worth it. We got back late Monday night, and had to be at work the next morning. I figure I can sleep anytime, but a trip to Jordan is a rarity. I can't wait to go back.

Will post my pics on Shutterfly ASAP!!

Whirling Dervish

You can throw a whirling dervish out of whirl, but how do you solve a problem like Maria? Isn't that really want we've all been pondering these many years. You probably could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl, but I don't think you'd want to. They might get tangled in their long robe and fall on you. That would be awkward.

Our PTA Iftar last night was really nice. The WD were pretty cool, but that's their only move (oh look, more spinning), so you wouldn't want to watch them for long periods of time. I am not sure how they do it without getting dizzy because they don't "spot" like a dancer would. They almost look like they go into some sort of trance, but then they stop suddenly without stumbling and falling like we used to as kids (or like an uncle Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named after too many drinkie poohs).

This weekend is there is a big party out at the Shell Club (as in Shell Gas). It's supposed to be the nicest one of the year, besides the galas. I'm just going because I heard chicken fajitas, and when they mentioned margaritas, they didn't hurt matters either. It's out in Mezze which is sort of a suburb of Damascus where a lot of Shell employees and other well-to-do people live.

And...can't leave a blog without mentioning cats! Habibi is back. The vet and I enticed her back in with canned cat food and mother's guilt. The vet went to Lebanon this week and picked me up a scratching pole and some little toys. Lebanon must look like one big Wal-Mart because people are always saying, "oh, I'll get that next time I go to Lebanon". Anything not found in Syria is sure to be in Lebanon. Anyway, Habibi is back, ready or not.

Here I Am!

I case you were wondering, this is where I am. Thursday night started out with a birthday part at the Marine Bar. It was about as wild as the Marine Bar gets, which means a few beers, they guys play pool, and if things get real crazy, we dance. Home at 1:00, alone.

Friday night my neighbors, Maureen and Rene, had a party at their house. It was very convenient for me since I only had to walk across the hall. Maureen is from Beaverton, can you believe that? Rene is a Salsa dancer, so that was fun.

Last night we went into the Old City to have pizza. They are tearing Straight Street up, and it's a mess. Megan wanted to pick up one of the rocks because she thought it'd be neat to have part of the Old City. I didn't think the broken up concrete was all that old. You have to dig about 5 meters down to get to the real Old City because they just build on top of the old rubble.

I am trying to tame one of "my" cats. I've named it Habibi. She's so cute, and let's me hold and pet her, but when I shut her in, she went nuts. I let her out after the third time she banged into the glass door. We'll see what the vet says. My cousin Steve sadly lost his battle with mental illness, and took his own life. Today I’d like to remember Steve, not for how he died, but for how he lived.

Steve is my cousin by marriage, but in all my memory, Steve has been a part of our family. I actually have no memory of trips to Baker without Steve being involved. He was a great, big cousin to us visiting Nebraska kids. Steve took me on my first kayak ride down the Powder River, and rushed us to the beach so we could see our first ever sunset on the beach.

Steve loved a good discussion. We rarely saw eye to eye, but he was a great debater, and was very passionate about what he believed in. And did Steve ever love a good, long story (which he told with the same passion he debated with)! Steve was a details man, and never forgot on iota of information. It would drive me crazy and awe me all at once. Steve could remember times, dates, amounts, and historical events like nobody I knew!

Steve was the hardest worker I’ve ever known. He could work rain or shine, and was so loyal to Christensen Electric, even toting their logo on all his clothing! He was known as a gentleman, in the building where he worked, and was admired for having a genuine goodness that is not often found.

Most importantly, Steve loved his family. Steve was a devoted father and husband. There wasn’t anything Steve wouldn’t do for his family. He was a wonderful provider, and worked so hard to make a home for them. They are his true legacy.

In all my heart, I hope that Steve has finally found his peace. I hope he is in Heaven, hanging out with Noah, discussing cubits or throwing a few horseshoes with David. Maybe he’s even found someone who likes the Farming game! That would definitely be Heaven for Steve, and we all know that game does take an eternity to play!

Lisa, Joel, Holly, Carrie, and Jenny, I love and miss you, and want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Love,

Channin

30 Days

This weekend we had the school's 50th anniversary celebration. Make sure you check out Shutterfly to see all the pictures. Now that I am able to download onto my computer, I hope to get a little video made to put on my blog.

This weekend I spent 8 hours moving to a new classroom, so the classroom picture is of my old class. Needless to say, I was very upset about being called at home at 10 o'clock on my Sunday to come pack boxes of books. Of course, being the shy person that I am, I barely said a word! OK, so I didn't throw things. Well, maybe I tossed a few books into boxes with excess force, but whatever!

The weather is finally starting to cool down! I actually opened my doors to let the breeze in. Of course, the weird, walleyed cat thought it should come in too. It has one eye that looks up. I can't decide if it's cute or really creepy!

Today is my one month anniversary of being in Syria. I think I've learned about one Arabic word/phrase a day. If I keep it up, I may be able to speak to 3 year olds by the end of the school year. The men at the taxi "store" next to my house always greet me, so I learned to say, "good morning" and "good evening". The one guy was so excited he gave me a big high 5! Yea, I'm cool.

Tonight was our elementary school open house. No parents came to my table. I felt like the little kid trying to sell lemonade when nobody wants to buy. One of the teachers sat down and chatted with me so I didn't feel like quite a loser.

Don't forget...3 days until Ramadan!

I Am a Winner

A "special" thanks to Curtis for this picture. They are happiness (tourist stage), hostility, humor, and home. Well, I am still loving it here, but I have to say, there are some things that seriously irritate me. It's not the big things, like taking your life in your hands everytime you cross the street or the clerk stalking you in every store. No, it's the great invention called electricity! I cannot tell you how much trouble I have here with all things that plug in. Most of the appliances are made for European homes, so the voltage is correct, but the plugs are too big. So, I go to the store and buy adaptors and a power strip. Problem solved? Oh, no, no, no my friend. That would be EASY! Some of my appliances work with one adaptor, but not the other, but only in certain outlets. Any guesses why? Me either. So today I toasted my waffles in the "room with no purpose" because the outlets in the kitchen don't seem to like my new toaster. I bought the power strip so I could plug in my hairdryer and table lamp at the same time, but again, it doesn't fit in the socket in my bedroom.

Then we get to the air conditioners! I guess I shouldn't complain too much because the living room and bedroom ACs work wonderfully. The AC in the kitchen has a mind of it's own, however! The remote says it's blowing at 70% at 16 C, but every time I try to turn the percentage up, it raises the temperature. 16C should be freezing me out, but instead my kitchen is roasting. Every once in a while the temp changes in 31 (which is 80F ish), so I think that is the true climate of my kitchen. The sad things is....the instructions are all in English!!

I have now conquered the gas stove and oven, which is good. I am about 90% on remembering to turn my water heater on and off. The hot water heater also heats the water for the radiators, so if I forget, the nice, warm, tropical climate in my living room is a good reminder!

Meg and I went to Cham City Center to go shopping yesterday. It's the biggest and nicest shopping center in Damascus. It really is nice too! It has a nice electronic store and supermarket where nobody stalks you as you shop!! There are many clothing stores, but I too busy getting the basics (mixing bowls, vacuum, toaster) to bother with clothing just yet. The mall isn't as adventurous as going to the Souks, but it's much more convenient.

The Gang's All Here

At last, all the staff of DCS has arrived in Syria! We started school 9 days late, and had to have a few subs, but the first week went well. Initially I thought I was going to have to teach a high school psych class, but that teacher made it in time.

Last night (Thursday) we had a Welcome Back party at our director, John's, house. It was the first time we had a chance to meet the returning teachers and the first time that we were all together as a staff. It was also the first time I had Mexican food in Syria, and it was soooo good. Afterwards a group of went to the Marine House (Bar) and had some drinks and played pool and Foosball. I seriously lack in any Foosball skills-how sad is that?!

Today has been a lazy day. I went to church this morning then came home and took a nap. I woke up and watch The Sound of Music (yes the REAL one) then came to school to call Laura and Mom. I hope you didn't get in trouble Laura!! Fridays are pretty quite since most of the stores are closed. There is a nice Christian shop on the way home from church that is open. They have the widest range of alcohol that I've seen, but I feel really wrong buying booze on my way home from church!!

Tomorrow my friend, Meg, and I are going to Cham Center, a big shopping center. I have a long list of things to get, including a vacuum. I hear it has the best super market in Damascus. I'll let you know. Shopping is always an adventure here. So far I've figured out what the purpose of most products are, but there are a few things I'm unsure about. I also bought a new camera this week so look for some pictures and, possibly, video in the next week!

Thanks for all the comments! It's great to hear from everyone back home.

Daily life

Well, life is starting to feel pretty normal now. I am establishing all
the little routines like going to work, working out, shopping. I love
walking to work in the morning. The streets are pretty quiet becauseSyrians
tend to stay up late and sleep in late, so it's usually a few men
washing cars, the guards, and me. The guards all recognize me and we
always exchange pleasantries. It's good to be nice to the men holding
AK47s!

School starts tomorrow! The maintenance crew has done an
amazing job with the school grounds. I wish I had a before and after
picture. It is really had to keep things looking new and clean in such
a hot, dry climate.

Somehow Meg and I got signed up to lead worship at church on Friday (that's when we have it since
Sunday is a workday here). I guess people were happy that we could sing
and speak English clearly. Bless their hearts, but the Filipino women
who are singing now are very difficult to understand, and none of us
are quite sure which song we are singing (even after they start)! Our
little church is called All-Saints of Damascus. It's very small, and
doesn't have a minister right now. The past minister was American, and
couldn't renew his visa anymore. They have ministers who want to come,
but they live in "Occupied Palestine" (or Israel as we know it)and are
not able to come to Syria.

Make sure to leave a comment! I am having them sent to my email address now-the site is blocked, but I got around that!

Bludan

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_7swEJOEyFOQ/RsvoyYOCreI/AAAAAAAAABQ/axRGm19iDp0/s320/Bloudan+trip+008.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5101426955119668706" />
Yesterday we (all 33 of us) took a charter bus to the city of Bludan which is Northwest of Damscus, in the AntiLebanon mountains. We ate at a wondeful restaurant that had a spring running through it. It had nice canvas canopies to keep the sun off, and it was so nice and cool. They served us TONS of great, Syrian food. We had so much, that when the brought dessert (fruit) they put it on the two table next to us, and we moved to the other tables. There simply wasn't room at our tables. I don't think I've ever been served quite so much food! I tried almost everything-hommos, taboola, baaba ghanooj, tahina, chicken, lamb-except the raw lamb (I don't know what it's called here)!

Can you find me in the pictures? Look on the right side half way down the table! The stand on the left that looks like a tin can is actually called "Hubbly, Bubbly". It's has a little bit of tobacco with a lot of flavoring, such as apple, rose, strawberry, and people smoke it. It's all the rage right now, and you see people having a hubbly bubbly after meals or with coffee. It isn't obnoxious like cigarette smoke unless you are in a tiny cafe and everyone is doing it.

Keeping Tabs

I am on Shutterfly. If you'd like to see my pictures, you can log on using my email address (chagnesinsyria@yahoo.com) with a password seechannin. My friend, Megan, was kind enough to forward some photos she's taken in the neighborhood, so there's some pictures taken here, even though I don't have a digi cam yet!

Today I bought a rug! Carol, a teacher who has been here 15 years, took a few of us to a wonderful rug dealer, Elias, down in the Christian Quarter of Old Damscus. He had some of the most beautiful rugs, so if someone could lend me $5,000, I'll get the one I really wanted. I got a nice, big, beautiful rug with white and blue. It makes the house feel much warmer since all the floors are marble. I have been working hard in my "garden" to get the fountain and lights cleaned. They turn the main water supply off at 4 pm, (which I didn't know) so I haven't filled my fountain yet. I thought the lights were all tin, but when I started cleaning them, I realized there ware glass panels that were just filthy. The one I finished actually looks really nice. Any advice on growing jasmine?

Today we are going to the commisary at the Embassy. I don't know if I'll join since we can get most everything in the Souke or at the shopping center. I would like to get oatmeal and Slenda! Not sure if it's work $100 membership fee.

Mosque

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_7swEJOEyFOQ/RsBpVESbhQI/AAAAAAAAABI/UkoRkKcpni8/s320/inside+om.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098190588832613634" />
This is the Omayyad Mosque in Old Damascus.

Right now I am unable to check postings, but please keep writing, I'll be able to get them eventually!

The Road to Damascus

After two very long, but uneventful days of travel, I have arrived in Syria. There is so much to tell about that I don't even know where to start!

THE CITY-Damascus has about 3 million people, and it is very busy and crowded. The traffic is insane with cars weaving every which way, people clinging on the back of trucks, no carseats, gawdy buses painted every color and adorned with mirrors, and the occasional horse and cart. The funny thing is, nobody seems to be stressed and I haven't seen an accident! We went to the Old City to the Souke or market. We visited the mosque, but since I don't have my book with me, I can't tell you the name. We went down the road called Straight to the house of Ananias. I'm sure when Paul was there, the 1970 Cadillac was not parked on the street!

MY HOUSE-It's big, about 1,500 sq feet with high ceilings. The furniture in my bedroom is huge and white lacquered. Nice. From what I've seen, I scored with the aparments. I have 1 1/2 baths (yes, Chad I do have a toilet, two infact), 2 bedrooms, a dining room, living room, kitchen, and 2 verandas with fountains. One is in front on the street, so I don't really use it, but I am going to get the fountain in the back going and try to revive the jasmine and palm trees.

THE SCHOOL-Talk about security! The school really is a compound with a security door and turn stiles. Once inside it is like a little college. There is a nice gym that I used last night after I locked myself out and had to wait for the key!My classroom is small, but very well equiped. Of course, I will only have 5-6 kids at a time, so the size isn't important.

SYRIANS-The people here are so friendly and easy-going. Some of the other teachers have taught in Qatar and Saudie and even they are shocked.

SHOPPING-Whoever told me that products were hard to get here, lied! I even found Tide and Downy, Laughing Cow cheese, and Kraft mayo (alas, no Best Foods). I live right by the Guess store, and can't wait to go in there. My neighborhood has lots of shops, cafes, spas, hairdressers. Yes, I already found a hairdresser-my #1 priority!

Lots of love to all!!!!!!

The Countdown

My wonderful family and friends helped my move out of my apartment, and my belongings are safely stowed in an undisclosed location in Eastern Oregon. We have had a great time. My cousins went camping at Anthony Lake, but I just went up for the day. Nine of us set out to hike to the peak of Gunsight Point. Only 5 made it, but we had fun and felt very outdoorsy since we didn't have a trail to follow. Last night we went bowling. Guess who bowled a 163? It must have been a fluke! My friend, Maggie, Railsback, is coming on Monday, and we are going camping for a few days.

Wallowa Lake

Laura and I just spent four wonderful days at Wallowa Lake. We rented a yurt, so we weren't exactally roughing it, but we did cook over the fire. Camping, city girl style. I just figured out how to add photos, so I will add those soon! We took the tram up to the peak of Mt. Howard, and spent a beautiful afternoon hiking around and taking in all the views. We went into town and few times and did some shopping. It's such a cute little town. I decided I was going to move there when I got back from Syria!

We are taking off on Thursday for British Colombia to visit my friends Anna, Gray and Andrea, friends of mine from Manarola. Will take (and post) pictures next time!

Getting ready

I thought I'd set up my own blog so everyone can keep up with me when I leave for Syria! I have 6 more days of school, then I'm off for the summer! I have joined the 21st century and bought a digital camera, so check back to see picture of Laura and my trips to Wallowa Lake and Victoria BC, the Bartshe family reunion, and the birthday/Bon Voyage party.
